 WINES

Viticulture in Moldova follows international trends and includes classic International, regional Caucasian and also indigenous grape varieties. Vineyards cover 277 thousand acres planted with Vitis Vinifera, of which 70 % are white varieties (Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Aligote, Rkatsiteli, etc.), mainly in the PGI Codru, and 30% are red varieties (Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Pinot Noir, Saperavi, etc.) typical for the southern regions of PGI Valul lui Traian and PGI Stefan Voda. Aromatic varieties account for 36 % of the vineyards.

The authentic and unique character of Moldovan wines is represented by a number of indigenous varieties: Feteasca Alba, Feteasca Regala, Feteasca Neagra, Rara Neagra, Plavai, Viorica, etc. – that account for about 15% of total vineyards.

FETEASCA ALBA (WHITE MAIDEN)

This variety has been cultivated for centuries in the region. Wines made from Feteasca Alba are very fresh, have citrusy and floral notes with medium acidity. These wines range across the board, from dry to semi-sweet.

Its fine wines remind very much of Viognier.

FETEASCA REGALA (ROYAL MAIDEN)

This variety was obtained as a result of cross-breeding Feteasca Alba with Hungarian variety Furmint.

Wines made from Feteasca Regala are similar to their Alba counterpart, yet they have crisp acidity. Feteasca Regala is typically dry.

FETEASCA NEAGRA (BLACK MAIDEN)

With a history of over 2000 years, this variety originates in Moldova, in the Prut river valley. Wines made of Feteasca Neagra attract with a bold, deep ruby color, rich bouquet of forest berries, cherry pit aroma and long fruity finish.

Depending on vinification, the tannins can range from rough to soft. When balanced by bright acidity and good concentration, Feteasca Neagra wines can age well.

RARA NEAGRA (RARE BLACK)

Cultivated for centuries by peasant farmers, this variety has been perfectly adapted to the sunny slopes in the South of Moldova. Wines made of Rara Neagra are pale in color, very fresh, soft in the taste, with notes of dry fruit and vanilla. Its fine wines remind very much of Pinot Noir.
